The Pridwin Hotel and Cottages offers a charming, luxurious experience with stunning waterfront views and a unique atmosphere reminiscent of a country estate. While many guests rave about the exceptional service, attentive managers like Ramon, and delightful amenities, some recent reviews have highlighted operational issues such as staffing challenges and service inconsistencies, particularly concerning room assignments and restaurant order fulfillment.
If you want to be disappointed despite beautiful views, the Pridwin Hotel restaurant is the place to go. We visited for lunch in mid-October with another couple. The service was shockingly bad. Our waiter forgot to put in our order for 25 minutes, and when I asked where the food was, he was flummoxed. The manager apologized but did nothing to fix the situation. When the dishes finally arrived, three out of four were completely wrong—shrimp served to a vegan, for example. The manager offered to comp the meal, but my concern was simply receiving the food we ordered. The bartender, manager, and waiter were all incompetent. I’ve been here before under previous ownership, and nothing has changed. I thought maybe they'd be a little less arrogant under new management and perhaps provide a good dining experience, but no. A nice view cannot make up for such terrible service. Avoid at all costs, don't be fooled.
A little pricy - but an absolutely amazing experience. Lovely and helpful staff, great rooms, amazing location - the view from the pool area is unrivaled. Has the feel of being a guest in a lavish country estate by the water. Good with families.
We set out for sunset beach but so happy we ended up at this hotel. The staff was lovely, especially, Jeff. Everything about the place was charming & beautiful. Can’t wait to go back.
Just came back from an epic few days celebrating my wife’s birthday at the Pridwin. We have been going to this resort for many years and it just keeps getting better and better. Great food, excellent service and extremely attentive manager Ramon who made sure our stay was absolutely perfect. Aside from the great facilities it’s the little things that make it special such as lemon ice at pool , Madeline’” cookies at the front desk , yoga on the lawn, great spa , sauna and steam room , evening campfires , live music ,fresh flowers and eggs directly from the onsite farm and outstanding boat captains Joe and Josh who were great nautical tour guides. I highly recommend the Pridwin and can’t wait to come back soon !
A fabulous, luxury hotel and restaurant right on Shelter Island. If you live close by, like we do, it's just a $32 round trip ferry from either Sag Harbor or Greenport and you are there. This is a beautiful location, right on the water. Beach and other amenities are available. We didn't stay at the hotel, we just had lunch. A delicious lunch. The drinks were superb. We had the NY Sour and Day Trip. For lunch we ate the Tuna Burger (I got it medium but should have gotten it a little rarer) and the Eggplant Sandwich (I thought a bit chewy to my taste, but I'm half Italian and picky about eggplant. I highly recommend them! Tell em Barsnobs sent ya!
We recently visited The Pridwin for a special celebration, and it couldn’t have been more wonderful. The hotel is beautiful, but what really made the experience exceptional was the manager, Ramon. He went above and beyond to make sure we felt taken care of. Truly outstanding service. Thank you, Ramon and The Pridwin team!
I am surprised by all the negative reviews…the Pridwin is incredible! The hotel feels like the set of a Wes Anderson movie - designed with a real attention to detail. They have staff from around the world who are interesting, incredibly polite, and eager to help. Their barbecue is like the perfect summer night…they had everything you could have wanted and live music !! Highly recommend :)
First time staying at the Pridwin and the experience was just ok. The property is fairly large and the location is great, walking distance to Sunset Beach. We stayed in the main house and our room was facing the back of the property. Which is usually not a problem but with the kitchen exhaust in the back location, our room had a noticeable kitchen smell to it. Not ideal considering the room rate. Service is spotty but it’s to be expected with seasonal staff. We didn’t dine at their restaurant but we did have delicious afternoon drinks on the patio.
This is a historic hotel on a treasured piece of shelter Island that has recently been redone. While the property is beautiful, unfortunately, it is clear that the team is not yet ready to manage this hotel and execute on a high level that one would expect for the price point. We arrived around 7 PM and found out the team had mistakenly reassigned us to a room in the main building as opposed to the cottage we originally booked. The front desk team’s first words were “Oh boy we have an issue,” which is not what you want to hear after a five hour drive in Memorial Day traffic. This was a preview for what was to come during our trip - kinks in the system (which is not unexpected with new hotel) coupled with a lack of hospitality skills: 1. At around 11 pm on our first night, we were awoken by room service loudly knocking on our door with food we did not order. It was jarring and we couldn’t fall back asleep. We then called the number provided for the manager, only to reach the cellphone of a gentleman no longer with the Pridwin. 2. While the food is excellent and the bartender was fantastic, the restaurant team struggles running the restaurant smoothly. Staff members are being trained on the POS system as you order and the menu’s contents. One day, my wife ordered a tuna burger at the bar. After being given a drink and utensils in the bar, her burger was mistakenly sent to our cabin. She waited 45 minutes before speaking to a manager and getting the burger. They tried to charge us for both burgers. 3. There are issues with the cleaning systems. Vacuum cleaning in the dining area occurs at 7am at the same time coffee is put out. It’s hard to enjoy your morning coffee when surrounded by three vacuum cleaners. Also, there are no wipes or spray to clean equipment after use in the gym. When my wife asked for a wipe to clean her mat, she was told to use a dry towel. In our view, this is a health hazard. 4. The management team seems committed to trying to improve. I met with the manager halfway through the stay to see what could be done to make up for our rocky entrance and overall experience (not something I usually do). He said he would revert to me, but I am still waiting to hear back after checkout. Overall, it is clear that the stakeholders behind this rehabilitation project have invested heavily in decor and ambience, but have invested lightly in hospitality services, operations, and HR training. A hotel of this level should have 24/7 front desk. Everyone is extremely nice when you interact with them; many of them unfortunately appear a bit lost. Hopefully they can right the ship because we’d love to come back to a hotel that’s actually delivering for the price point they’re asking.
