The American Hotel receives mixed reviews, with some praising its historic ambiance and attentive service, while others express disappointment with the food quality and staff behavior. A recurring theme centers around inconsistent and sometimes confrontational interactions with management, particularly regarding dress code enforcement and service animal policies. Overall, the property seems to struggle with maintaining consistent hospitality standards.
As the owner of The Lugo Group, I travel extensively and have had the opportunity to visit many luxury hotels and restaurants throughout the country. I fully respect dress codes and understand that businesses have every right to establish and enforce them. This review is not about a dress code. It is about how a guest was treated. While visiting Sag Harbor with my family, I stopped into this beautiful property and purchased approximately $152 worth of cigars from the hotel. Afterward, I attempted to order drinks for my fiancé and her mother while enjoying the atmosphere inside. I was approached by a manager named Julian and told I could not remain because I was not wearing a collared shirt. Although I was dressed neatly and respectfully, I accepted the explanation and stepped outside. However, after observing other guests dining inside without collared shirts, I returned to politely ask for clarification because I was genuinely confused by the apparent inconsistency. Another manager listened to my concerns and seemed to understand my position. Unfortunately, when Julian returned, the conversation became unnecessarily confrontational. Rather than professionally addressing my question, I was spoken to in a dismissive manner and instructed to leave in front of other guests. The interaction was embarrassing, disappointing, and completely inconsistent with the level of hospitality I would expect from a property of this caliber. The experience left such a negative impression that I immediately returned the cigars I had just purchased and requested a full refund. I have retained the receipt documenting both the purchase and refund. To be clear, I would have gladly complied with any dress code had it been communicated professionally and applied consistently. Instead, I left feeling unwelcome and disrespected for simply asking a reasonable question. The property itself is beautiful, which makes the experience even more disappointing. Luxury hospitality is not defined solely by architecture, décor, or exclusivity. It is defined by how guests are treated. Unfortunately, my interaction with Julian fell far short of that standard. I hope ownership and senior management take guest concerns seriously and use this as an opportunity to reinforce the importance of professionalism, consistency, and respectful communication.
My family and I have been patronizing this restaurant for over 40 years. My mother has been coming here for her birthday celebration dinner since long before I was even born. And I’ll preface this by saying that the wait staff and food are always great. But for the first time, we had the intense displeasure of dealing with their GM Julian Ramirez (see photo attached) up close and personally. A person in our party had a service animal, which we called ahead and mentioned we would be bringing and he was wearing his service animal vest and well behaved and controlled as service animals should always be from their training. But this seem to set them off immediately, as Julian and his gaggle of Maitre Ds decided to berate us about the service dog. First they decided that because the animal was held in our arms while entering the restaurant and navigating to our seat (we did this to avoid tripping any waiters as this has been a concern other restaurants have raised and we try to respect) that he must not be a service animal. Clearly their education on what services a service animal can provide is extremely lacking. Then they proceeded to endlessly patronize us about how he must be on the floor during the entire dinner (they mentioned this on 11 separate occassions in the span of 5 minutes waiting for our table to be ready, yes I counted). Since this wasn’t our very first time ever bringing the service animal to a restaurant, we clearly understood this and didnt need this unwelcome lecture. Throughout our dinner, Julian then went out of his way to check on us repeatedly (6 times) to ensure the service animal was on the floor, which he clearly always was. Before seating us he lamented that hes dealt with other patrons who bring their dogs who clearly arent service animals but claim to be, and tried offering this as a justification for his incredibly disrespectful behavior. He then proceeded to quiz us on what service our animal provides, clearly eager to exercise whatever modicum of power he can over us. Which is what this entire experience seemed to be about, a little man with a little power trying to exert dominance over his little fiefdom. I strongly suggest the owners retire this clearly disturbed manager from his position anywhere near dealing with patrons of the establishment. Oh and to top it all off, as we left, another clearly regular patron said “cute dog, I bring mine here too all the time”. So I wonder what kindof double standard is set here, where someone who clearly doesnt have a service animal (since he didnt bring them with him this time) can bring their regular non-service dog “all the time” without harrassment from this gaggle of manager trolls behind the front desk, but people who very clearly have a legitimate service dog receive endless harassment about it.
We liked the town of Sag Harbor. We had dinner at The American Hotel many times. The food was excellent and the wait staff were friendly. We also like the Whaler Museum. Taking the family boat around Shelter Island and many other fun activities in Sag Harbor. We also knew many of the neighbors in our villa community.
We went here for dinner. This place feels like an institution so pros are it has old school character, servers are a vibe and terrific. Cons are the food is quite mediocre for how pricy it is
A couple of weeks ago, my wife and I stayed overnight at the American Hotel and had dinner. The room was fine, but we were disappointed by the restaurant. It is a historic place with occasional celebrities and Hampton's prices but the food and service did not live up to our expectations. The duck breast portion was minuscule, the smoked trout appetizer was not appetizing and our waiter was stretched thin. The oysters were very good.
It is with great disappointment that I must convey my dissatisfaction regarding our recent visits to this establishment. My wife and I, having graced this venue on multiple occasions with the hope of consistency, have resolved never to return. The ambiance, regrettably, lacks the refinement one would anticipate from an establishment of purported standing. The culinary offerings were underwhelming, a stark contrast to what one expects when patronizing such a place. Moreover, the conduct of the staff was, to put it mildly, unbecoming. A particular waiter—whose name, if memory serves, is Osmian—displayed a demeanor towards fellow patrons that was nothing short of appalling. It is most disconcerting that the management appears disengaged from these glaring deficiencies. Observing waitstaff indulging in meals within view of the guests, while others awaited service, speaks volumes of the absence of professionalism. One would expect a more cultivated approach to customer service, especially when considerable sums have been expended. In summation, the experience fell woefully short of the standards we uphold, making it impossible for us to revisit.
Beautiful old style restaurant, very good service, nice staff and good food. All meals came at the same time and it seemed the waiters had some good training. Always would go back.
Myself and a woman I'm dating had a 7pm reservation. We were greeted very warmly upon our arrival and it only got better from that point. Seated in the bar area at a 2 top table which I thought was perfect it was alive with all types laughs and conversations which made for a great atmosphere! Food wine service dessert as always was perfect took our time after 3 hours I know thats a long one but my date was so engaging gorgeous and a little tipsy it felt like 1 hour. No pressure to leave or flip our table if your in Sag Harbor don't miss this place it's fantastic!!
Ate dinner with my wife for our anniversary, the staff made us feel special. Mikhail was our server, 5 stars for him too! The food was excellent. Loved the Lobster Risotto and the Bananas Foster.
Stopped in for a drink on a sunday nigh. Bar was packed, so we were offered the couch in the front of the establishment. Absolutely great. The staff was friendly. The Manhattan was perfect. Watching staff interact with local patrons as they came and went was all the entertainment we needed. Historic, iconic, and quaint. A Sag Harbor must !
